James “Larry” Smith: Obituary

James “Larry” Smith, age 75, passed away on July 18, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. Larry was born January 22, 1944 in Oconee, Georgia to the late James Wesley Smith and Mrs. Jean (Batson) Smith of Oconee. Larry was a member of Haddock Baptist Church from October 26, 1979 to January 8, 2014. He was elected as a deacon on August 6, 1986. He was currently a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Hiawassee, GA. Larry was also a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge # 114 in Blairsville, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason and a Shriner. For several years, Larry & Tresser were both actively involved in the Milledgeville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Larry was a 32 year retiree from Georgia College and State University serving as a supervisor in the maintenance department where he formed many bonds of long lasting friendships. Larry was a loyal husband to his wife of 55 years, Tresser (Gladin) Smith. Larry, better known to many as “Papa”, was a sentimental, giving and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He preferred to spend his free time fishing, hunting, tending to his garden and especially spoiling his grandchildren but his real passion was flying. Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his father James Wesley Smith. He is survived by his wife, Tresser Smith; daughter and daughter-in-law, Tresser Gay and Kelli Hogue of Dayton, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Ivy and Kimberly Smith of Young Harris, Georgia; grandchildren, Peyton Smith, Ashton and husband Seth Bailey, Oren Gondal, and Lily Gondal; great granddaughter, Sophia Bailey; mother, Jean Smith of Oconee, Ga, brothers, Randy and wife Sandra Smith of Tennille and Tony Smith of Milledgeville. Also surviving are many family and friends that will forever cherish his memory. Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville is announcing as a courtesy for Coggins Funeral Home of Thomaston, Georgia, services for Rev. Donald “Don” Kirkland age 84 of Thomaston Ga, formerly of Blairsville, who died Monday November 4, 2019 at his residence.

Rev. Kirkland was born on July 14, 1935 in Slocomb Al, to the late Roy Kirkland and the late Alline Golden Kirkland. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Rev. Kirkland loved aviation and flew thirty years in Africa for the International Mission Board. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as Associate Pastor for many years. Rev. Kirkland also served as Associate Pastor at Zion Baptist Church in Suches Ga.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Diane Kirkland of Thomaston Ga, daughters Mrs. Cindy Kirkland Cone of Pine Mountain Ga, Mrs. Sharon Kirkland (David) Timms of Pine Mountain Ga, step daughter Mrs. Teresa Hall Ponder of Lagrange Ga, step son Mr. Raymond (Michelle) Ponder of Suches Ga. 8 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday November 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Mountain View Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friend at Coggins Funeral Home on Tuesday November 5, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Mr. John Arthur Ehlers Sr., age 72, of Murphy, NC, passed into the eternal care of his Lord on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family. A member of Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic Church, John was born in Buffalo, NY, to the late Arthur Joseph & Dorothy Lillian Hamilton Ehlers, on April 6, 1947. He will be forever remembered as a loving husband and father, as well as, Vietnam Vet, Truck Driver, Musician, and family man. More than these he will be remembered for his kind, caring, funny, and all around irresistible personality. He enjoyed telling stories about his one million miles accident free and cracking jokes that would bring a whole room to laughter. He will be remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his loving wife, Elizabeth Marie McCue Ehlers; children, Shannon Renee Ehlers, Robert Steven (Hilary) Ehlers, Megan Elizabeth Ehlers, John Arthur Ehlers Jr., and Dawn Marie Cannon. Also sharing in his legacy are two grandchildren, Andrew Ehlers and Sabrina Ehlers.
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, October 11, 2019, from Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville, NC.

Jerold (Jerry) Jeffery Katzer, age 74, of Tavares, FL was called to his eternal home Thursday, August 22, 2019. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 6, 1945 and preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy (Rady) Katzer, and his brother, Bruce. He was a member at St. Patricks Catholic Church of Mt. Dora, Florida. Jerold was a fun-loving, kind, caring and all around amazing husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He loved his family dearly. He enjoyed making people laugh and would do anything for anybody. He was also a jack of all trades and could fix anything. He loved camping and spent summers with his wife, Mary in the mountains of North Georgia. Jerold is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Mary Collentine Katzer of Tavares, Florida; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and April Katzer of West Bend, Wisconsin, Scott Katzer of Portland, Oregon, Gary and Ginger Katzer of Champaign, Illinois, Michael Brooks of Key Largo, Florida, Christopher and Tricia Brooks of Tallahassee, Florida, Patrick Brooks and Meredith Oliver of Lawrenceville, Georgia; grandchildren, Hunter, Cassidy, Ellie Jo, Brannon, Brandon, Corey, Kayla, Taylor, and Nicole; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive. No public services are planned, and in lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to be made to Heart of the Nation, P.O. Box 14428, Milwaukee, WI 53214. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Byers officiating. Special music will be presented by Wayne Hundley and the Cheerful Sounds. Interment will follow the service at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Louise Hitch Knight, 87, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, August 8, 2019. She was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, on November 1, 1931, to Frank Hitch and Agnes Martin Hitch. She graduated from North Georgia College in 1951. Lou married Gordon E Knight in 1956. For many years she lived in Atlanta and worked for General Services Administration of the Federal Government until her retirement in 1993. She then worked for The Arthritis Foundation. In 2001, she moved to Blue Ridge. Lou loved cats, the color blue, reading books, working crossword puzzles, and her church. She had a great sense of humor and could light up a room with her smile. Lou is survived by her daughter, Marilou Knight (Rebecca Williams) and her daughters in love, Pam Garrett and Denise Ellwanger. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on September 7, 2019, at the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM. To honor Lou, please wear blue and cat items. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice and to Georgia Mountain Hospice.

Mr. Jackie Lee Keys, age 67, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at his home. Jackie was born February 27, 1952 in Young Harris, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. James and Ida (Shook) Keys and his older brother, Junior Keys. He was the beloved father of daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Russell Fleming from Jacksonville, Florida and son, Daniel Keys of Young Harris. He is also survived by sisters, Geneva Hamilton of  Young Harris, Dorothy (Gary) Ellis of Hayesville, Ettie Sue Long of Young Harris, Ruby Smith of Young Harris; grandchildren Alexa Keys (Alexa said she lost her best friend), Hayli Phillips, and Kendra Fleming; and great grandchildren; Aiden, Brooklyn and Connor.

Frontz Christian Goring, Jr: Obituary

Mr. Frontz Christian Goring, Jr., age 98, of Hiawassee, Georgia passed away on  July 29, 2019 at Brasstown Manor. Frontz was born in McComb County, Michigan on July 20, 1921 to the late Frontz Emil and Eleanor Mary (Boehmer) Goring. Frontz was a member of Union Hill United Methodist Church and the local VFW. He served in the Army and Air Force. While in the Army, he taught radar technology. Frontz enjoyed staying active with sports, two of his favorites were golfing and baseball. He played in a VFW Golf group and also played baseball in the position of a pitcher and was known for his fastball. He also spent his time as a 4-H leader for the horse club. He was an artist, using many mediums to display his talent. Frontz was a wood carver, bowl turner and leaded glass creator. While his wife was in Chatuge Nursing Home, Frontz made sure to still take care of her and feed her three meals a day until she passed away in 2006. After moving to Brasstown Manor, Frontz found that he enjoyed playing cards with the ladies. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mason Lucas Goring and brother, William Edward Goring. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Ed Kerner; sister, Eleanor Knowlton; grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Tammy and Mike Dockham Jr., and Renee and Robert Hinesley; great grandchildren, Ashley Dockham, Aaron and Ashley Hinesley, Ryan Dockham, Chelsea Hinesley and Alicia Hinesley. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Union Hill United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Burch Cemetery. Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee, Georgia is in charge of the arrangements.
