Four Young Harris Suspects Arrested for Burglary and Theft

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested and charged four suspects in reference to burglaries and theft on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018. Two burglaries were reported in the month of September, one occurring at a residence on Timberland Drive, the second at a residence on Laurel Hill Road. The theft was reported in June, occurring at Brasstown Valley Resort Equani Spa.

Upon investigation, deputies and investigators executed two search warrants at a residence on Meadow Lane in Young Harris. During the execution of the search warrants, investigators recovered property identified as being stolen in the burglaries and theft cases.Young Harris crime

The following suspects were arrested and charged with the following crimes:

Jeffery Dale Plott, 47, of Young Harris

  •  Two counts burglary in the first degree
  • One count burglary in the second degree
  • One count theft by taking

 

Carl Wallace Merritt, 47, of Young Harris

  • Two counts burglary in the first degree
  • One count burglary in the second degree
  • Two counts theft by receieving stolen property

 

Susan Kimberly Spears, 44, of Young Harris

  • One count burglary
  • One count theft by receiving stolen property

 

Candie Sue Merritt, 44, of Young Harris

  • Two counts theft by receiving stolen property

 

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional arrests and charges are possible. The cases will be forwarded to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

UPDATED: Female subject injured in alleged break-in at local restaurant

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – FetchYourNews (FYN) received information regarding an incident which occurred Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, at Hawg Wild BBQ and Catfish House.

According to a credible source, a female subject, who was allegedly under the influence of intoxicants, attempted entry into the restaurant by breaking a window, setting off an alarm. Upon attempting entry into the establishment, the subject is said to have sustained a substantial leg injury due to the manner of passage.

FYN was advised that the female suspect allegedly had two prior encounters with Towns County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the day. The subject is said to have out-of-area warrants from a jurisdiction unwilling to extradite.

FYN contacted Towns County Sheriff’s Office to gain further insight into the situation. According to law enforcement, the subject is currently at a medical facility due to the injury incurred during the incident.

Towns County Sheriff’s Office states that additional information will be released once family members have been notified.

UPDATED: FYN has learned the subject is Michelle Renee Harper, 39, of Fitzgerald, Ga.

Harper was charged with one count Criminal Damage to Property upon release from the medical facility.

The case will be referred to Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Harper is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigations result in drug arrests

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two suspects on drug charges in two separate incidents.

On Wednesday, June 13, Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators, along with deputies, searched a residence located off Bell Gap Road in Hiawassee. Upon completion of the search, investigators arrested Dena Beasley, 47, of Hiawassee, on the following charges:

  • 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
  • Possession of Methamphetamine
  • 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
  • Possession of Drug Related Objects
  • 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
  • Possession of Schedule IV Controlled Substance
  • 1 Count Probation Violation

On Thursday, June 14, Towns County Deputies investigated a separate incident on Brad Road in Hiawassee, and arrested Rachel Ann Carrasco, 43, of Hiawassee ,on the following drug related charges:

  • 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
  • Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance
  • 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
  • Prescription Drugs not in the original container

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

 

Four charged in theft of ATV

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Towns County deputies responded to Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris Sunday, May 27, in reference to the theft of a 2005 Toro All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Workman valued at $15,000.

On Tuesday, May 29, Towns County deputies, assisted by investigators, recovered the stolen ATV in a wooded area off of Gumlog Road in Young Harris.

Upon further investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident, the following suspects were arrested, each charged with one count felony theft by taking:

  • Gregory William Greene, 19, of Young Harris;
  • Michael Brett Davis, 20, of Young Harris;
  • Morgan Dakota Smith, 19, of Hiawassee; and
  • Tyler Wade Persall, 18, of Young Harris.

Two patrol vehicles damaged after high-speed pursuit

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – On Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at approximately 3:15 p.m., Hiawassee Police Department Detective Brandon Barrett observed a subject known to have an active arrest warrant, driving eastbound on South Main Street. Detective Barrett was on patrol at the time the subject was spotted.

Detective Barrett and the Towns County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop near Chatuge Way.

After initially stopping for the officers, the driver of the vehicle made a U-turn, striking the front of Detective Barrett’s patrol vehicle.

The driver, Angela Michelle Capozzoli of Hiawassee, proceeded to flee westbound on South Main Street at a high rate of speed.

Hiawassee Police Department and Towns County Sheriff’s Office pursued the fleeing vehicle to Bugscuffle Road, where Capozzoli struck both patrol vehicles with her vehicle, disabling one.

Hiawassee Police Department continued to pursue Capozzoli to Bugscuffle Spur, where the subject turned onto a dirt road, unable to proceed in the occupied vehicle.

Capozzoli exited the vehicle, fleeing on foot into a heavily wooded area where officers lost contact .

At approximately 9:00 p.m., Capozzoli was located and apprehended after a short foot pursuit by Hiawassee Police Department Sergeant Tracy James and Officer John Carter.

“I am incredibly thankful that no one was injured during the pursuit,” Hiawassee Police Chief Chief Paul Smith said, “Acts of aggression towards law enforcement officers of this extreme are rare in Hiawassee, but obviously not impossible. Working together with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to apprehend and bring charges against Capozzoli.”

The Towns County Sheriff’s Office has obtained arrest warrants for Capozzoli. She has been charged with two-counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Willful Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer, and two-counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Capozzoli is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Juveniles arrested at Bell Mountain Park

HIAWASSEE, Ga. –  Two juvenile females, 16, were arrested and charged with one-count criminal trespass Tuesday, May 1, at Bell Mountain Park. The charges stemmed from a report called in by a witness, stating that an act of vandalism had occurred. Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly responded to the park, arriving within minutes of the report.

The two juvenile suspects, along with the suspected vehicle they were occupying, were located, and the minors were charged with criminal trespass. The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents. The charges were the result of vandalism to the wooden observation deck, allegedly spray-painted by the teenagers. The suspects were not from the Towns County area.

In recent months, Bell Mountain Park has been the target of vandalism. A cash reward is being offered to anyone providing information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Information will be kept confidential. Those with information are asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division of the Towns County Sheriff’s Office at 706-896-4444.

Arson suspect charged with additional burglaries

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Towns County Sheriff’s deputies rearrested Austin James Shook on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, charging him with an additional count of first-degree burglary, one count of second-degree burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools.  The charges stemmed from two reported burglaries within Bald Mountain Park.

Shook was released on bond at the time for previous charges of burglary and arson, which occurred during the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23. The residence, located on Glassy Mountain Road, was unoccupied at the time of the incident.  Upon further investigation, it was determined that the residence was burglarized prior to the start of the fire.

Sheriff’s Investigators executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence located near the scene of the crime, recovering related evidence. Investigators arrested Shook, 19, of Hiawassee, Georgia, charging him with two initial counts of burglary in the first-degree, one count of possession of burglary tools and one count of arson in the first-degree.

This investigation is active and ongoing at this time.  As the investigation proceeds, additional charges are likely.

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – On October 24, 2017, deputies with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office arrested two suspects on separate incidents charging them with drug offenses.

Deputies arrested Denny Mark Silvers, age 52, of Hiawassee, Georgia. He was taken into custody in the vicinity the 1400 block of Highway 66 in Young Harris, Georgia. Denny Mark Silvers was arrested and charged with 1 Count of V.G.C.S.A. Possession of a Schedule IV drug, 1 Count of V.G.C.S.A. Possession of a Schedule II drugs (Methamphetamine), 1 Count of Prescription Drugs Not In Original Container, and I Count of Drug Related Objects.

Deputies arrested the second suspect, Shaun Keith Ewing, age 35, of Young Harris, Georgia at a location off Upper Bell Creek Road in Hiawassee, Georgia. Ewing was charged with 1 Count of V.G.C.S.A. Possession of Less Than 1 Oz. of Marijuana.

TCSO Citizen Law Enforcement Academy VII begins

Hiawassee, GA – The seventh session of the Citizen Law Enforcement Academy (CLEA), sponsored by the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, began on Tuesday, July 25, at McConnell Baptist Church on Main Street in Hiawassee. CLEA is a ten week course designed to familiarize the community with the operations of the Sheriff’s Office.

The meeting began with opening remarks by the Lead Pastor of McConnell Baptist, Steven Taylor, who asked to address the group. “We’re grateful for the Sheriff’s Office and all they do. We wanted to be a part of it. We look forward to serving again in the future.”

The initial class focused on Sheriff Chris Clinton’s presentation on the history of the Office of the Sheriff. “It’s the oldest elected office of any kind.”, the Sheriff told the participants. Clinton covered the full scope of the position’s antiquity which included knowledge of 1215 AD, the year the people rose against the dictatorial King John of England. He explained how the Sheriff stood up for the citizens.

“I answer to the people.”, the Sheriff expressed. “I work for you.”

Sheriff Clinton went on to provide insight on the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. He cited issues that led to their establishment and how they still apply today. “The Founders knew it was the people themselves who mattered…We, the people, are the kings in America.”

Colonel Terry Conner, Captain Jim Coach, and Lieutenant Aaron Deyton of the Towns County Sheriff’s Office attended Tuesday’s meeting. David Marrella, a CLEA graduate, was on hand to assist the new students.

CLEA meets weekly until graduation commences on September 26. Classes require admission through the Towns County Sheriff’s Office. Alumni are permitted to volunteer their time for suitable tasks such as administrative duties upon completion of the 20 hour course. This in turn lowers the cost of operation for county’s taxpayers.

Theft Suspect Arrested

A 33 year old Hiawassee woman was arrested after Towns County Sheriff’s Investigators conducted an investigation into stolen deposits.  There were four deposits missing from the Dollar General Store located on Highway 288 in Hiawassee.   Amanda Shelton, an employee of the store, was arrested as a result of the investigation.

Shelton was charged with 2 counts of Theft by Unlawful Appropriation.  The deposits were taken between December 2, 2016 and January 3, 2017.  The total amount of the deposits taken was over $10,000.  The investigation case report will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for Prosecution.

Deputies Respond to 911 Hang Up Call

Towns County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on Scataway Road in Hiawassee, Georgia, during the early morning hours on Friday, December 30, in reference to a 911 hang up call.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 79 year old male and a 61 year old female, later determined to be husband and wife, in a semi-conscious state. Both subjects were transported to Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee before being airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia, where they were admitted to the hospital in serious condition.

The case is being investigated by the Towns County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The incident is believed to be domestic violence related. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Suspect Charged in Drug Trafficking Case

One suspect is in custody on numerous charges and a large amount of illegal drugs are off the streets after multiple search warrants were served on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, by Sheriff Chris Clinton and Deputies with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office in connection with an ongoing drug investigation.Towns Drugs 3

The search warrants executed by the Towns County Sheriff’s Office yielded a large quantity of various illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $80,352.

Steven Douglas Anderson, age 19, of Hayesville, North Carolina was arrested and charged with multiple violations of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act. His Charges include the following criminal offenses:

During the course of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained for Anderson’s safe that had been originally alerted on by Towns County Sheriff’s K-9 Hunter. Towns County Sheriff’s Deputies requested assistance from Towns County Fire Department in opening the safe utilizing equipment for vehicle extraction. We would like to thank the fire department for their help in “cracking the safe.”

The investigation is currently active and ongoing.

This year the Sheriff’s Christmas Parade will be Saturday, November 26.  The parade will start at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds and end at Park Sterling Bank in Hiawassee.  Anyone can enter the parade and participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy.  Those who wish may also donate to the Empty Stocking Fund.  The proceeds from the Sheriff’s Empty Stocking fund go directly to benefit underprivileged children in Towns County, children who might not receive Christmas gifts otherwise.   Last year, thanks to all those who donated, we were able to provide gifts for hundreds of Towns County Children.  This year we hope to continue to meet those needs for children who otherwise would not receive Christmas gifts, but we will need your help and continued support.  We have already begun to receive donations for the children, and I would like to thank those who have joined us to help in this effort.  Each year since 2007, I have had the honor to be a part of something that brings joy to the hearts of those who give as well as to the children who receive.  I am thankful to serve such a caring community.

All of this is done in such a manner as to allow the parents to pick up the gifts or, if unable to pick them up due to transportation issues, we will deliver the gifts to the parents.  The idea behind the program is to allow families to celebrate Christmas in their own way.  It is a wonderful program that brings joy to the hearts of many young children each year. I would like to take this opportunity to say a personal thank you to the entire Sheriff’s Office staff and our CLEA volunteers for working so hard each year to ensure that local children and families have a merry Christmas!
