Hiawassee accepts rollback on 2021 millage rate in 3 to 2 vote
News September 8, 2021
HIAWASSEE, Ga – Hiawassee City Council moved to accept the rollback on the 2021 millage rate at 1.977 mills in a three to two vote.
Councilmembers Anne Mitchell and Patsy Owens opposed the lowering of the millage rate.
“We’re gonna get to the point where we don’t have any money coming into the city,” Owens stated. “Then what are we going to do? Have a cakewalk?”
Mayor Liz Ordiales added she thought Hiawassee lost its chance to bring more money into the city in 2017 when Hiawassee picked up $5 million in unaccounted-for funds. It set the city back financially.
Maintaining the current millage rate only adds $8,000 to the property tax collections. The current rate is 2.067 mills. It’s continued to steadily decline since 2017, dropping from 2.258 mills over time. The gross digest climbs year over year, however.
Mitchell agreed with that assessment but stated that they’re “no reason” for Hiawassee’s taxes to be that low.
LOST collections account for a large portion of funds for Hiawassee. Without visitors in the community contributing to LOST, the millage rate would be significantly higher. Last year, $250,689 came from LOST.
Hiawassee collected more in LOST and alcohol tax than in property taxes last year.
The public hearing for the 2021 millage rate will be on September 27, prior to the work session. The second reading and acceptance will be on October 5.
Hiawassee collects its property taxes, not the tax commissioner. The city decided to move the collections in-house to save money.

City Council declares Hiawassee a Purple Heart Community
Business August 4, 2021
HIAWASSEE, Ga – The City of Hiawassee became a Purple Heart City following Towns County’s move to do so last month.
Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient Ryan McPherson continued his quest to add Northeast Georgia communities to the Purple Heart Trail and spoke about the importance of recognizing veterans at the work session.
“Here in Northeast Georgia, we’ve been underrepresented as far as places. Despite the fact that we’re a big veteran population, we seem to go above and beyond for all of our veteran community. The combat-wounded soldier appears to go underrecognized,” McPherson stated.
McPherson received his badge after being injured during a tour of duty in 2008 in Iraq. He’s semi-retired and moved to Union County from Marietta, Georgia.
“it’s great to have this officially, the proclamation. We’ll take this letter, up to the national chapter of the military order of the Purple Heart and it will go up on the map,” McPherson explained.
Mayor Liz Ordiales added that they have quite a few Purple Heart Recipients in Towns County and that the Military Order of the Purple Heart will be in attendance at the 9/11 tribute this year.
George Washington created the Purple Heart as a badge of military merit in 1782. He pinned it on three people. It was also the first American Service Award made available to the common soldier.

Ryan McPherson at the July Towns County Commission meeting.
In recent wars, thousands of soldiers received Purple Hearts:
- 320,000 in World War I
- Over 1,000,000 in World War II
- 118,000 in the Korean War
- 351,000 in Vietnam
- 600 in the Persian Gulf
- 12,000 in Afghanistan
- 35,000 in Iraq
Towns County can now be recognized as a stop on the Purple Heart Trail which symbolically honors recipients across the nation.
“[It’s] a visual reminder to those who use our roadways that others have paid a high price for freedom for them to travel along those roads and to live in a free society,” McPherson added.
Military Order of the Purple Heart was established in 1992. It begins in Mt. Vernon, Virginia, and has designated sections in 45 states and Guam.

August 12 Public Hearing Scheduled for Joint Comprehensive Plan
News July 29, 2021
HIAWASSEE, Ga – A public hearing concerning the comprehensive plan is scheduled for August 12 at City Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
The joint comprehensive plan outlines goals for the future of Hiawassee, Young Harris, and Towns County as a whole. It’s updated every five years.
Public input helps city and county officials determine the path Towns County will take for the next five to ten years.
Often by clearly stating certain goals within the document, it becomes easier for counties and cities to be considered for certain grant funding.
Citizens are also encouraged to complete a quick survey to help inform the direction of the comprehensive plan: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W7MHXXN?fbclid=IwAR0jUmN8qKUQ15Fv2dowkFXpfqYr2xq7aUsFAIfpafto_UdjTyElZmPgV0U

Towns County asking citizens’ input in comprehensive plan
Community, News July 25, 2021
HIAWASSEE, GA – Towns County, City of Hiawassee, and City of Young Harris want citizens’ input in the joint comprehensive plan for the next five years.
The public survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W7MHXXN?fbclid=IwAR0Pc7lMiYqfPwuKAY1gggoUSsqnxmhNxtN03u53oHu8uT7h5v8Spu9AvPQ
The goal is to hear from those living in the area and gain a better understanding of how they would like to see Towns County develop in the future.
A comprehensive plan is updated every five years, previously it was every 10 years. It takes into account residents’ wishes for the future and outlines a mission, which hopefully makes the end result easier to achieve.
Often times by including a certain goal in a comprehensive plan, it becomes easier for a county or city to receive grant funding for those projects.
The survey only takes a few minutes, and all responses are kept entirely confidential.
The county and cities will host public meetings and additional opportunities to participate in the process too.
