Mrs. Betty Lou (Norton) Pedigo, age 87, of Hiawassee, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home. Betty was born on September 24, 1931 to the late Mr. Jack and Sallie (Davis) Norton in Clay Hole, Kentucky. Mrs. Pedigo was a member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church and  a member of the Esther Sunday School Class for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, was an avid bowler, and loved the University of Kentucky Wildcats. She was a devoted wife who traveled around the United States with her husband for his work. She was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Carol Pedigo of Hughes, Arkansas; daughter and son-in-law Sally Lynn and Mike McLeod of South Carolina; sister and brother-in-law Sue and Hamp Barnett of Tennessee; grandchildren Jason Randall Pedigo, Angela McLeod Odom, William Julius Coons Jr, Julianne Elizabeth Coons Sapp; great grandchildren Colton Pedigo, Austin Pedigo, Raelynn Sapp, Elliott Odom, Georgia Pedigo and Rhett Sapp. She is preceded in death by her husband Barney Rice Pedigo, grandson Michael Shane Pedigo, brothers Jack Norton Jr., and Chelsea Norton; and sister Margaret Alice Norton.

Graveside services: Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Osborn Cemetery in Hiawassee, Georgia. Banister Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George (Bud) Robert Lederer, age 93, of Young Harris, Georgia passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Ronnie Greene Heart Center in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.  Bud was born August 12, 1925 to the late Mr. George Bauer Lederer and Muriel Adele (Rutan) Lederer in Glen Rock, New Jersey.  Bud was a member of Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, Georgia, as well as Military Officers association of America (MOAA)  He was a World War II veteran having served  for 3 1/2 yrs in the U. S. Navy as a Lieutenant aboard the USS Crescent City.  He was a mathematician and chemist with a degree in mechanical engineering, which in turn made him an accomplished businessman.  He was a loving husband and father, the glue that held his family together.  He is survived by his wife June Lederer; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Gettemy; step-daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Bob Johnson; and step-son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Tina Devecchis. Also surviving are a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous friends.  He was well loved by all. A memorial service will be held in the church at a future date to be announced.  In lieu of flowers, kindly send any donations to The Mountain Presbyterian Church food pantry. Sue Parker Johnson, age 74 of Hayesville, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Chatuge Regional Hospital. Sue was born to the late Marvin and Pansy Love Parker on January 20, 1944, in Moultrie,Georgia. Raised in Moultrie, she was a proud alumna of Moultrie High School’s Class of 1962 and remained an avid Packer Football fan her entire life. She was a member of First Methodist Church in Hayesville and loved singing in the choir on Sundays. Sue was a expert gardener- and very proud of her “Master Gardener” certification; she loved nature, especially the mountains and lakes of North Georgia and Western North Carolina. She was a wonderful friend and even better mother. As her friends and family would attest, she was always ready with a big smile and a helping hand; she loved life and she was a constant light in her loved ones’ lives. Sue often said her favorite job was being a Nana to her two beloved grandsons and they loved her dearly in return. Sue is survived by the love of her life and husband of 54 years Michael Johnson; her only daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Britt Swilley of Athens, Georgia; her sister Frances Parker Suber of Moultrie, Georgia; her brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Judy Parker of Dunnellon, Florida; grandson, John Andrew Swilley of Athens, Georgia; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Thomas Hayes and Mary Elizabeth Swilley of Painesville, Ohio/Athens, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Virginia Parker; sister-in-law, Janie Parker; and her much loved 16 year old Cockapoo “Miss Peaches.”  Memorial Services will be held in Hayesville, on Saturday January 19th at 11am at Hayesville First United Methodist and in Moultrie on Friday, January 25th at 2pm at the First Baptist Church.  Receptions will follow both services.  Banister Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Melba Kathryn Stewart, age 89, of Hiawassee, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018. Mrs. Stewart was born to Mr. William Harper and Melba (Thompson) Etheridge on September 10, 1929 in Rose Hill, Georgia. Mrs. Stewart was a member of United Methodist Church in Hiawassee, Georgia and an Eastern Star. She loved to garden and to cook. Melba leaves behind sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Janie Wallace, Ronald and Lynne Stewart, Edward and Kathleen Stewart and son Christopher Stewart; grandchildren, Emily Wallace, Jessica Stewart Jennifer Stewart and Kristin and Matt Macunas; great grandson, Paxton Macunas. She is proceeded in death by her husband Harry Eugene Stewart and daughter, Brenda Grandfield and Brenda Stewart. No services are planned at this time. Nancy Shirley Sellers at the age of 64, won her battle with cancer as she went to be with her Heavenly Father on the morning of November 12, 2018. She was a lifelong resident of Hayesville, NC. Shirley was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Louise Hoffman Ledford. She was preceded in death by sister, Fleta Norton, and brother, David Ledford.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Stephen “Doc” Sellers of Hayesville, NC; Daughter, Heidi Aaron (Richie) of Braselton, Ga; Son, Dylan Sellers of Charleston, SC; two beautiful granddaughters Kemerson and Emmalyn Aaron. Sisters: Peggy Sedberry (Danny) of Mt. Gilead, NC; Patsy Gribble (Mike) of Hayesville, NC; Pam Martin (Ken) of Hayesville, NC. Brother-in-law, Charlie Norton of Loganville, Ga and sister-in-law, Sharon Ledford and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was a beloved Mother, Granna, wife, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a selfless lady who loved her husband, children, and granddaughters, Kemerson and Emmalyn, with all her heart. Shirley’s talents were displayed by her singing, floral arrangements and cooking which she enjoyed. Everyone else enjoyed her cooking too, especially her dressing.
Shirley was a faithful member of Mission Hill Baptist Church of Hayesville, NC for over 30 years. She dedicated her life to the children at the church as the teacher but also an example of a true Christian. Every year she directed the Christmas and Easter programs and unselfishly gave many hours of her time. Shirley’s love and her faith for the Lord was evident in every part of her life even up until the end when she peacefully passed and saw the wonderful things that she had taught all the children about at church.
Shirley was one of a kind and will truly be missed, but she left behind a legacy of love and true unwavering faith.

Funeral service will be held on Friday November 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee with Rev. Mark Stewart officiating and Mike Gribble to give the eulogy. Pallbearers will be Chuck Norton, Dan Norton, Scott Ledford, Jason Gribble, Michael Anderson, Justin McClure. Honorary pallbearers will be Zac Anderson and Caz Anderson.

The family will receive friends and acquaintances from 12:00 pm until the service hour at the Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Oak Forest Cemetery 990 Oak Forest Road Hayesville N.C. 28904

Mrs. Mary Ellis Polly, age 60, of Hiawasee, Georgia, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Union General Hospital. Mary was born in Young Harris, Georgia, April 15, 1958 to Mr. Ellis Rogers and the late Mrs. Ruby (Gibson) Rogers. Mary was of the Baptist faith, spending many of her youth years going to Calvary Baptist Church with her grandmother. Mary was a true caretaker; she often would take food to people in the community who were ill or offer to babysit children. She looked after her father, making certain he was taken care of, and she also was like a mother to her youngest brother Ray. Her other joy came from gardening and canning the harvest with her family. Her family was blessed in many ways by Mary’s talents but her cooking may have topped it all; everyone always looked forward to a meal at her house, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was a people person. She enjoyed working at the Georgia Mountain Fair part-time and Towns County Schools. Mary is survived by her devoted husband James Polly; sisters and brothers-in-law Sheryl and Edward Tench, Wilma and James Cote; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends and extended family. She is preceded in death by her infant son Joshua David Polly; brothers Ray Rogers and J.B McFalls.

Mrs. Ruth Vella Sprinkles, age 88, of Hiawassee, GA, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 30, 2018. She was born on Thursday, March 30, 1930, in Hiawassee, GA, to the late Carlton & Carrie Ledford Nations. A lifetime member of Towns County, Mrs. Sprinkles will be remembered not only as the long time custodian of city hall,and also several years at Carolina Dress Corporation as a seamstress. Ruth was also an avid gardener who loved any kind of flower of plant she could get. She will also be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. A lady of honesty, integrity and kindness, Ruth will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her children: Roy Dean Sprinkles (Nancy), Kathy Taylor (Terry), Reggie Sprinkles (Alice) and Gail Callaway; Sisters, Sue Nations and Becky Drake. Also sharing in her legacy are eight grandchildren, several Great Grandchildren, along with many nieces and Nephew

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 2:00 pm from Chapel of Cochran Funeral home in Hiawassee, with Rev. Glen Eller and Rev. Billy Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at Cochran Funeral Home in Hiawassee, on Tuesday, the same day of the funeral, starting at 11:00 a.m.

Charles “Chuck” Benton Miller, age 87, of Young Harris, Georgia passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 at his home after an extended illness. Charles was born on April 25, 1931 to the late Carson and Ella (Bass) Miller in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was a member of North Mt Zion Church of God and served in the U.S. Navy for thirty years. Charles lived for everything military: ships, planes, if it related to our armed forces he was interested in it. Charles lived life to the fullest. He was always on the go; he loved to travel in his RV and visit new places. He wanted to stay busy and out of the house. He loved gardening, yard work and going to church. He was an upbeat person with a wonderful personality. Charles is survived by daughter and long term partner Terry Miller and Ted Williams of California; son Dale Miller of California; step son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. David Lee; brothers and sisters-in-law L Gene and Edna Miller of Kinston,  North Carolina, Larry and Renee Miller of Hiawassee, Roger and Sandra Miller of Williamston, North Carolina, Jerry and Victoria Miller of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandchildren Rachel and Christian  and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, family and caretakers. Charles is proceeded in death by brother Jimmy Miller; and two sisters Eleanore Hill and Betty Arrington.

Family will receive friends on Friday, January 25, 2018, 12:00PM until 2:00PM at Banister Funeral Home

The Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces Funeral Services for Mrs. Leta Mae Garrett, age 84 of Hiawassee who passed away on Monday morning, December 31, 2018 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

She will be warmly remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her family: husband of 67 years, James T. Garrett; daughters & sons-in-law, Betsy & Dennis Morgan and Sheila & Michael Jones; son & daughter-in-law, Gregory T. & Sandy Garrett; grandchildren, Leta “Shelly” Fuller, Melvin Linn Master, Kristy Bullard, Garrett (Lindsey) Ellison, Leslie (Chuck) Prickett, Adam Garrett, Janet Jones, Michael Jones, Eric Jones, Patrick Jones, Megan Jones, Jessica Sullivan, and Brittany Cooper; great grandchildren, Blake Parker, Savanna Masters, Cole Stevens, Devin Bullard, Tucker Ellison, Hayden Gospodareck, Lexi Lyles, Charlee Prickett, Madison Garrett, Hannah Jones, Garrison Jones, Noah Jones, Will Sullivan, and Wyatt Cooper; great-great grandchildren, Winford Parker and Blakley Parker. Also, sharing in her legacy are 8 siblings and numerous extended family members.

Leta was preceded in death by her son, Gary James Garrett; daughter, Charlotte Ann “Chick” Garrett; her parents; and 3 siblings.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee with Rev. Glen Eller and Rev. Brandon Arrowood. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the service begins.
