UPDATED: Young Harris man arrested for methamphetamine distribution
Arrest Reports, News September 8, 2018YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Michael Dean Byers, 46, of Young Harris, was apprehended and arrested following a traffic stop on Friday, Sept. 7, after three felony warrants for trafficking methamphetamine were issued. Towns County Sheriff’s Office seized the BMW 325 that Byers was driving.

According to law enforcement officials with the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO), a search of Michael Byers’ home on Sept. 5, in Young Harris off of KIng Cove Road, led to the discovery of an ounce of methamphetamine.
FYN has learned that Byers was wanted in connection with an ARDEO operation, “Unicoi Pipeline,” a 16-month investigation involving a dozen law enforcement agencies which led to the seizure of 15 pounds of methamphetamine, valued at over $750,000.
According to law enforcement officials, Charles Michael Ledford and Bobby Roger Burch were responsible for distributing methamphetamine in North Georgia, and Clay County, North Carolina, over the course of a two year period.
Firearms seized from a Clay County residence
According to GBI Special Agent in Charge Mitchell Posey, three pounds of methamphetamine was concealed in a battery in Burch’s truck after allegedly leaving Ledford’s Conyers residence, traveling toward Hayesville, North Carolina.
Authorities state twelve additional pounds of methamphetamine were discovered upon execution of a search warrant at Ledford’s home.

In addition, law enforcement seized firearms from Burch’s residence in Clay County, North Carolina, many of which were alledgedly stolen.
UPDATED: Charles Michael Ledford, 48, of Conyers was arrested for trafficking methamphetamine. Ledford was transported to the Rockdale County Detention Center.
Bobby RogerBurch, 47, of Hayesville, NC was arrested for trafficking methamphetamine. Warrants are pending in Clay County, NC for Maintain Vehicle/Dwelling/Place for Controlled Substances, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Methamphetamine, and Possession of Stolen Firearm. Burch was transported to the Hall County Detention Center.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Young Harris burglary leads to arrest

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On Friday, May 4, Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Chatuge Woods Campground, located off Red Banks Road, in Young Harris, in reference to a reported burglary. The incident was turned over to investigators.
Upon completion of an investigation, Terry William Henderson, 44, of Warne, North Carolina, was arrested Thursday, June 7, on the following charges:
- 1 Count of Burglary
- 1 Count of Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary
- 1 Count of Theft by Deception
- 2 Counts Theft by Taking
- 1 Count of False Statements/Writings
- 1 Count of Hindering the Apprehension of a Criminal
The investigation is active and ongoing, with additional charges possible.
Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Towns County pursuit ends in Clay County arrest
News March 12, 2018HIAWASSEE, Ga. – An officer with the Hiawassee Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle with an inoperable taillight near the Valero gas station on state Route 76, shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26.
The vehicle fled, emergency dispatch was notified, and law enforcement followed in pursuit from Towns County, Georgia, into Clay County, North Carolina.
Towns and Clay County deputies pursued the vehicle on state Route 69 near Byers Road. The driver proceeded to advance onto Cherry Road.
The vehicle then crashed into a ditch on Watters Road, striking a Towns County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
A brief foot chase followed into the nearby woods, ending with the apprehension of the driver by a Towns County deputy.
The driver of the 1999 GMC Sonoma, Ryan Turbyfill, had outstanding warrants from Union County, Georgia, and New Hanover, North Carolina, for larceny.
Turbyfill, 39, of Wilmington, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Resisting a Public Officer, Driving While Impaired, and Reckless Driving.
In addition, the suspect was served a larceny warrant from New Hanover County, North Carolina, and a fugitive warrant for charges in Union County, Georgia.
Turbyfill was taken into custody, transported to the Clay County Detention Center, and is being held on a $20,000 bond.

HIAWASSEE, GA – Hiawassee Councilman Jay Chastain, Jr. has publicly stepped forth to announce his endorsement of Hiawassee Mayoral candidate Barry Keith Dearing less than two weeks prior to election day.
The 12-year incumbent tells Fetch Your News that Mr. Dearing has his full support.
“I’ve known Barry for ages. He’s a fine man. There’s no doubt he entered the race because he wants what’s best for the City’s future,” the Councilman says.
Councilman Chastain, a lifelong resident and Paramedic of 31-years, met with candidate Dearing on the morning of Thursday, October 26, at McConnell Baptist Church during a newly initiated prayer breakfast to offer his blessing.
Barry Keith Dearing, a fourth generation local and the longtime CEO of VanKeith Insurance, says he appreciates Jay Chastain Jr.’s approval.
“He’s a good man and he’s committed to not only the Council, but to the community as a First Responder. I’m honored,” Dearing confided.
When pressed, both conservative candidates affirmed it’s neither the mayoral opposition’s lifestyle nor the fact she isn’t a “local” – the admitted concern Liz Ordiales raised at the Council forum – but the core issues that matter.
Of concern is the controversial imposition of the newly adopted BRMEMC Franchise Tax, confirmed to adversely affect the future budgets of Hiawassee citizens.
The recently passed planning-expansion ordinance, opposed by Councilman Chastain during a Special Called Meeting shortly after Pro-Tem Liz Ordiales announced her candidacy, is also an issue of debate.
Questionable decisions the former council member made while serving as President of the Towns County Fire Corps, including allegations of the alteration of Meeting minutes and the mismanagement of funds, and an initial attempt to reject the now-popular Mayors’ Park, have also put Ordiales in the hot seat.
Chastain’s decision to outwardly support mayoral candidate Dearing emerged unexpectedly during a community prayer meeting hosted at McConnell Church. The breakfast, sponsored in partnership with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, is an initiative of Sheriff Chris Clinton to unite residents with local law enforcement and first responders.
Councilman Jay Chastain, Jr., the son of a slain Towns County Sheriff whose life ended while serving the community in 1974, expressed his heartfelt approval of Barry Dearing as Hiawassee’s next Mayor.
“I want to see Hiawassee thrive economically and I believe it will. I want the residents to know where I stand, local or move-in. It’s beside them,” Chastain parted before rushing off to arrive on-time for his role as a veteran Medic.

Suspect Arrested in Financial Transaction Card Fraud

Hiawassee, GA – After an extensive investigation by Towns County Sheriff’s Office, Barbara Parker, 44, of Hiawassee, Georgia, a former employee of Legacy Link, Inc., was arrested on Friday, September 1, 2017 and charged with seven (7) counts of Financial Transaction Card Fraud.
A report was made to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office in June of 2017 in reference to the misuse of funds related to the operation of the Towns County Senior Center, operated by Legacy Link, Inc.
Parker was terminated by Legacy Link prior to completion of an independent audit of the spending practices at the Towns County Senior Center.
Once the audit was complete, the findings were forwarded to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
Sheriff’s investigators, upon completion their investigation and consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, obtained seven (7) warrants, charging Barbara Parker with Financial Transaction Card Fraud.
The case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution and additional charges are likely.
Hiawassee man charged with sexual exploitation of children
Arrest Reports, News December 10, 2018HIAWASSEE, Ga. – On Wednesday, Nov. 28, Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators and deputies assisted agents from Homeland Security Investigations with the execution of a search warrant at a residence located within Bald Mountain Park.
Agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and State Probation Officers assisted with the warrant.
During the course of executing the search warrant, law enforcement officers recovered evidence which resulted in the arrest of a suspect.
Edward Lee Trusky, 38, of Hiawassee, was taken into custody on the following charges:
- One Count of Sexual Exploitation of Children
- One Count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
The investigation is active and ongoing.
The case will be forwarded to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Trusky is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Man sought for assault on law enforcement faces drug charges
Arrest Reports, News December 3, 2018YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Law enforcement officers from the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Hiawassee Police Departmet arrested a suspect at a residence on Sampson Road in Young Harris on Sunday, Nov. 25, on outstanding warrants stemming from Towns, Union, and Gordon Counties.
Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators seized metamphetamine with a street-value of $5,000, illicit Schedule II and Schedule IV drugs, additional drug-related objects, and cash. 
The suspect was identified as Christopher Steven Ray, 34, of Murphy, North Carolina. Ray was taken into custody, and charged with the following offenses:
- One Count Trafficking in Methamphetamine
- One Count Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute
- One Count Possession of Methamphetamine
- One Count Possession of Schedule II drugs
- One Count Possession of Schedule IV drugs
- One Count Possession of Drug-Related Objects
- One Count Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers
In addition to the listed charges, investigators served warrants on Ray which involved a previous encounter with the subject on Sept. 6, 2018. The warrants were related to the following crimes:
- One Count Possession of Methamphetamine
- Three Counts Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers
- Two Counts Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act, Possession of Schedule IV drugs
Gordon County Sheriff’s Office held outstanding warrants on Ray for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer along with several traffic offense warrants.
Union County Sheriff’s Office had previously issued a warrant for Ray for Violation of Probation.
The Towns County Sheriff’s Office warrants and charges will be forwarded to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Ray is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Suspect at large in Hiawassee armed robbery
News November 23, 2017HIAWASSEE, Ga. – On Nov. 22, 2017, at 8:25 p.m., two Hiawassee Police officers were dispatched to an armed robbery at the Save-A-Lot grocery store located at 236 N. Main St. The officers were on scene within one minute and began searching the area for the suspect who had fled on foot.
It was reported that after the store was closed, a white male, approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall with a slim build, appeared from the rear of the store wearing a mask and brandishing a handgun. One employee was locked in a cooler while the other was lead at gunpoint to the safe. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the safe, and the suspect fled the store on foot.
The employees were not harmed during the incident.
Towns County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search with bloodhound, Copper, but the suspect remains at large.

Towns County Schools were back in session as of Thursday, August 3rd. Please be aware that in the mornings from approximately 7:30 AM until approximately 8:00 AM there will be increased traffic in front of the school. Traffic will again increase around 3:00 PM. The Sheriff’s Office will be providing traffic control to assist with safety.
Also, please be mindful that school buses will be picking up and dropping off children in the mornings and afternoons. It is the duty of any driver of a motor vehicle, when passing or overtaking a school bus from either direction, to come to a complete stop before reaching the school bus at any time the visual signals of the bus are on. The driver shall not resume travel until the bus has once again resumed travel and has deactivated the signals. Passing a stopped school bus is a serious traffic offense. School bus drivers are authorized and directed under Georgia law to make a report describing any vehicle committing the offense. Said report will then be turned over to the local law enforcement having authority and a citation issued.
The following information, provided by Safe Kids USA, is offered to parents of school age children. These are helpful ideas that may help keep your child safe.
School buses are generally considered one of the safest ways to travel; however, an estimated 5,000 children are injured each year in school bus related accidents. Many of these injuries occur when children are entering or exiting the bus. This is likely due to the fact that the driver has a blind spot of about 10 feet around the bus. This is sometimes difficult for younger children to understand. Half of all school-age pedestrians killed in bus-related crashes are between 5 and 7 years old (SAFE KIDS USA)
• Help keep children safe by teaching them to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the door opens, and the bus driver says that it is safe to board the bus.
• Make sure children know that they should never walk behind or close to the sides of a bus.
• Teach children to never run across the road to catch a school bus.
• Pay extra attention and never speed when driving in a school zone and around school buses and pedestrians.
As any parent will tell you, our children are our greatest blessings in life. As your Sheriff, I am committed to doing all that I can to help our children remain safe. Please help by being extra alert when driving and reminding others to do so as well.
Sheriff’s Office seeks public’s help in abandoned puppies case
News December 8, 2018BRASSTOWN BALD, Ga. -Towns County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating the person or persons that abandoned three puppies.
On Friday morning, Dec. 7, deputies responded to a call in reference to puppies that were abandoned at a trash dumpster located on Highway 180 Spur near Brasstown Bald.
Upon arrival, deputies located three small puppies at the scene. The puppies appeared to not have eaten in several days.
The puppies were transported to the Mountain Animal Shelter to be checked and cleared medically, and afterwards will be likely placed for adoption.
Towns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cruelty to animals incident.
Anyone with information as to the person or persons responsible for leaving the puppies at the dumpster is asked to call the Towns County Sheriff’s Office at 706-896-4444.

Sandy Springs Police Department gifts Towns County Sheriff’s Office with equipment
News December 3, 2018YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On Monday, Nov. 26, the Towns County Sheriff’s Office received over $25,000 worth of donated equipment from the Sandy Springs Police Department. Sheriff Clinton expressed that he is “very happy” to receive the donated surplus equipment for the Sheriff’s Office, adding that Santa Claus came early this year.
The equipment received includes the following items: six blue light bars for patrol vehicles, a tag reader, push bumpers, window bars, consoles, laptop brackets, dry erase boards, various blue light marker lights, and other miscellaneous items. According to the sheriff, the items will be highly beneficial in savings to the Sheriff’s Office budget.
Sheriff Clinton thanks the Sandy Springs Police Department for the donated equipment.
Drug Arrests continue in Young Harris
Arrest Reports, News October 15, 2018YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – In recent weeks, Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators and deputies have continued the execution of search warrants in search of illegal drugs and stolen property.
In the past week, investigators and deputies executed two search warrants in the Young Harris area.
The search warrants were in reference to separate information developed by investigators. The first search warrant was executed on Thursday, Oct. 11, at a residence located on Red Fox Farm Road.
Investigators seized a quanity of marijuana during the search with a street value of $13,500.
Jennifer Ann Max, 52, of Young Harris, was arrested and charged with the following crimes:
- One Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
Manufacturing Marijuana - One Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
Felony Possession of Marijuana - One Count of Drug-Related Objects
The second search warrant was executed on Friday, Oct. 12, at a residence on Meadow Lane.
Investigators arrested two suspects during the course of the warrant execution.
Carl Wallace Merritt, 47, of Young Harris, was arrested and charged with the following crime:
- One Count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
Possession of Methamphetamine
Candie Sue Merrit, 44, of Young Harris, was arrested and charged with the following crime:
- One Count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act,
Possession of Methamphetamine
Investigators recovered several items during the execution of the search warrant which had been previously reported as stolen in a burglary in the Towns County area.
The investigation is active and on-going. Additional charges are likely.
The cases will be forwarded to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Sheriff’s Office seizes vehicle, over $13K in drug distribution arrest

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – On the morning of Saturday, Sept. 22, Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Black Chrysler PT Cruiser on Kelly Road in Hiawassee. Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators assisted the deputies with the traffic stop. Upon investigation, the vehicle was impounded and a search warrant was obtained.
Towns County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joseph Carson Loog, 41, of Paris, TN.
Loog was charged with the following crimes:
- 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute
- 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act, possession of methamphetamine
- 1 Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act, possession of marijuana
- 1 Count Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
- 1 Count Possession of Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
- 1 Count of Giving a False Name to Law Enforcement
- 1 Count of Driving on Suspended License
- 1 Count of No Proof of Insurance
- 1 Count of No Seatbelt

Hiawassee manhunt leads to four arrests, recovery of stolen firearms
Arrest Reports, News August 25, 2018HIAWASSEE, Ga. – On Wednesday, Aug. 22, Towns County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist Hiawassee Police Department following a traffic stop at Chatuge Lodge, after two suspects exited a vehicle they were occupying, and fled on foot. Law enforcement officers established a perimeter in the area, and a sheriff’s bloodhound was deployed on scene in an attempt to locate the fleeing subjects. The suspects were not apprehended at that time.
The following day, Aug. 23, Towns County 911 received a call pertaining to two subjects fitting the description in the vicinity of Pioneer Trail, located off Highway 75 North. A responding deputy spotted the two suspects, whom proceeded to flee on foot. Additional law enforcement officers arrived on scene, and established a perimeter. A female subject was discovered hiding near a residential area, and was taken into custody without incident.
A CodeRed 911 alert call was dispatched to residents in the area, advising citizens to be on the lookout for the second suspect.
The male suspect, Shaun Ewing, 36, of Hiawassee, was spotted shortly thereafter on Upper Bell Creek Road. Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hiawassee Police Department officers continued the search throughout the night, and into the following morning.
On the morning of Friday, Aug. 24, a tip was received that Ewing was at a location off of Highway 75 North. Law enforcement officers responded on scene, taking the suspect into custody without further incident. A second CodeRed alert was activated, alerting area residents that the manhunt had concluded due to the suspect’s arrest.
K-9 Unit searching the Upper Bell Creek area
The suspects have been linked to an ongoing investigation by the Towns County Sheriff’s Office related to a burglary that was reported on Aug. 15, at a residence off of Fodder Creek Road. A victim reported that numerous firearms, along with other items, had been stolen.
Towns County Sheriff’s Office investigators teamed with officers from the Hiawassee Police Department to execute a search warrant at a residence on Kontahetta Way in Hiawassee.
Deputies arrested James Robert Gregory, 38, seizing items that had been stolen during the burglary, along with a quantity of methamphetamine.
On Friday, Aug. 24, law enforcement officers recovered additional firearms and items from a location off of Swallow Creek Road that had been reported as stolen from the Fodder Creek residence.
Hiawassee Police Department arrested and charged Bobbie LeAnn Saxon, 37, of Hiawassee, with the following offenses:
- One Count Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act, Possession of Methamphetamine
- One Count Fleeing and Attempting to Elude
- One Count Failure to Maintain Lane
- One Count No Seat Belt
- One Count Possession of Drug-Related Objects
Towns County Sheriff’s Office arrested the following suspects:
- Sandi Pate, 29, of Hiawassee — Probation Violation Warrant

According to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation into the burglary is considered active and ongoing, and additional charges are forthcoming.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
