Stolen fairgrounds’ truck recovered in Lake Chatuge by Towns County Dive Team
News April 6, 2019
HIAWASSEE, Ga. – A truck owned by Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds was recovered in Lake Chatuge this morning, Saturday, April 6, after being stolen by an unidentified subject. FYN obtained reports from multiple authorities stating an attempted ATM theft was involved in the incident.
Towns County Fire and Rescue Water Rescue Recovery Team responded to a request from Clay County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina Highway Patrol to locate the vehicle in the vicinity of the Ledford’s Chapel Road portion of Lake Chatuge.
Towns County Divers Jeremy Parker and Jonathan Wilson, along with the dive team leader, Terry Parker, reponded to Clay County’s request for assistance. Recovery Diver Jeremy Parker entered Lake Chatuge, checking in and around the vehicle for victims. No victims were located. Wrecker cables were attached to the vehicle, and it was extracted from the water. The vehicle was discovered approximately 40 feet from the embankment in roughly 12 feet of water.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
UPDATED: Overturned truck blocks through traffic on State Route 76, east of Hiawassee
News March 27, 2019HIAWASSEE, Ga. – A construction truck hauling asphalt overturned while headed eastbound from Hiawassee, near Abe Cove Road on State Route 76, shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 27.
Towns County Fire and Rescue reported that the driver did not sustain significant injuries, adding that the accident was likely due to muddy conditions on the shoulder of the roadway.
Hiawassee Police Department informed that State Route 76 will be temporarily closed to through traffic while the truck is removed. At 2:02 p.m. traffic was reported as backed up for approximately one mile, eastbound.
UPDATED: Traffic began flowing at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Bicyclist killed on Young Harris mountain
News February 27, 2019
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Earlier this afternoon, Wednesday, Feb. 27, a 66-year-old local bicyclist was struck and killed by a motorist while traveling west on Highway 76, in the vicinity of Young Harris mountain.
According to Towns County emergency responders dispatched to the scene, it appeared that the man may have slightly swerved into traffic to avoid something in his path when the approaching vehicle collided.
The next of kin is the process of notification at this time.
A law enforcement source tells FYN that no charges were filed against the motorist.
FYN will provide additional details as they become available.

Child Bitten by Copperhead Snake in Hiawassee
News May 20, 2019
HIAWASSEE, Ga. – A 12-year-old child suffered a bite from a juvenile copperhead snake Sunday, May 19, shortly before 9 p.m. The incident occurred in the Macedonia area, east of Hiawassee. FYN learned that the child was struck on the hand by the snake, and air-lifted to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta for emergency treatment. Towns County Emergency Medical Services and Towns County Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.
Copperheads are pit vipers, like rattlesnakes and water moccasins. Pit vipers have “heat-sensory pits between eye and nostril on each side of head,” which are able to detect minute differences in temperatures so that the snakes can accurately strike the source of heat, which is often potential prey. “Copperhead behavior is very much like that of most other pit vipers,” said herpetologist Jeff Beane, collections manager of amphibians and reptiles at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
Copperheads bite more people in most years than any other U.S. species of snake, according to the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service. Fortunately, copperhead venom is not extremely potent. Unlike most venomous snakes, copperheads give no warning signs and strike almost immediately if they feel threatened. Copperheads have hemotoxic venom, said Beane, which means that a copperhead bite “often results in temporary tissue damage in the immediate area of bite.” Their bite may be painful but is “very rarely fatal to humans.” Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems may have strong reactions to the venom, however, and anyone bitten by a copperhead should seek medical attention.
Towns County readies for warm weather season
News March 20, 2019HIAWASSEE, Ga. – As winter officially reached its end, Towns County Commissioner Cliff Bradshaw announced that preparations are underway to welcome the spring and summer seasons. The commissioner reported that crews are hard at work, striving to make the county as presentable as possible for residents and tourists.
Bradshaw said that the road department has been working each day to clear debris from roadsides and culverts, and detainee laborers are making an effort to maintain county land. “I’m pushing them as hard as I can,” the commissioner said. A clean-up project is progressing at county-run Chatuge Woods campgrounf, with brush piles formed for Towns County Fire and Rescue to burn.
Correction: FYN originally listed Bald Mountain Park as county-maintained. Commissioner Bradshaw informed that Chatuge Woods, located near Bald Mountain Park, is in the process of county upkeep in hopes of also drawing visitors to the privately-owned camping resort.
Commissioner Bradshaw said that the county beach, located west of Hiawassee, is preparing to re-open for the season, and landscaping maintenance is taking place to make the area appealing to visitors.
The Towns County Courthouse is scheduled to be pressure-washed and repainted, via a scissor lift, by a detainee crew this summer. “We keep them so busy that it’s actually hard to pull them off their regular schedule in summer to do something else,” Bradshaw explained.
Rocks were removed from the outfield of the Little League baseball field, and fencing has been replaced.
Litter control efforts are advancing, with the Adopt-a-Road program recently initiated, and Clean Sweep Week has been extended to two weeks in late April.
“I’m just very, very picky and try to make our county look as good and presentable as possible,” the commissioner said.

Reward offered for information on Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds’ truck theft
News April 9, 2019
HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Towns County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $500 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the theft and criminal damage which occurred at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the Towns County Sheriff’s Office at 706-896-4444. Any and all information will be kept confidential, the agency said.
