UPDATED: Hiawassee subject in custody, tased after police pursuit

HIAWASSEE, Ga.- A Towns County Sheriff’s Office deputy engaged in the pursuit of a fleeing vehicle, following an attempted traffic stop, Wednesday, Aug. 14, on State Route 288 in Hiawassee.

Patrick Ryan Oakes, 40, of Hiawassee, led authorities on a short chase this afternoon before wrecking the white Chevrolet SUV that he was driving, causing slight damage to a county patrol vehicle. Towns County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspect was subdued by taser prior to his arrest. Oakes was transported by deputies to the Towns County Detention Center in Young Harris.

Oakes is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
UPDATED: Oakes was initially charged with driving too fast for conditions and failure to drive within a single lane. Additional charges are in pending status. Oakes is being held without bond as of Aug. 15.
