HIAWASSEE, Ga. – The 68th annual Georgia Mountain Fair has begun, and Saturday, July 21, marked the tradition of the ever-popular fair parade. This year’s parade theme was “Hometown Pride” and floats in the procession were decorated accordingly. The participants gathered at South State Bank to line up for the event, which was set into motion at 11 a.m., and ended at the fairgrounds. The caravan was led by local World War 2 veterans who served as this year’s Grand Marshals.

First place winner, Hiawassee Antique Mall

The floats were judged prior to parade’s start, with Hiawassee Antique Mall awarded $2,500 for first place. Eastgate Church placed second, winning $1,500, with Sons of the American Revolution awarded $500 for third prize. The prize money was donated by a local resident who does not wish to receive public recognition.

Local businesses and organizations, antique vehicles, and horseback riders slowly made their way down Main Street, tossing candy to the children.

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle participated in the parade, walking the route, and shaking hands with bystanders.

The Georgia Mountain Fair runs through Saturday, July 28.

General admission is $12.00, with concerts included in the the entry fee. Children 12 and under are admitted at no charge.
