Heating Assistance available for Elderly and Homebound

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Winter heating assistance will be made available for eligible elderly and homebound residents beginning Nov. 1, 2018. The program is sponsored by Ninth District Opportunity, Inc., in cooperation with Georgia Department of Human Services, and aims to provide a one-time gas or electric heating payment for qualified citizens residing in the counties of Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Dawson, Elbert, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White.

Households in which all members are 65 years and older, or individuals rendered homebound due to health issues, may apply for heating assistance. Depending on fund availability, the program may open to the general public on Dec. 3, 2018.

Eligibility will be based on the combined income of household members. Applicants must provide verification of age for each member of the household, documentation of combined income received in the previous 30 days – i.e. check stubs, public assistance statements, unemployment checks – verification of citizenship with Social Security numbers, along with the most recent heating source or electric bill. Eligible households must be responsible for their home heating costs.

Applicants are required to schedule appointments through the automated systems cited, as the local office will not set appontments.

Appointments will not be available for scheduling prior to Nov. 1. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Appointments will be scheduled until funding is exhausted.

Households with members age 65 years and older, or homebound individuals, may solely apply beginning Nov. 1. A one-time check will be issued to the home heating supplier on behalf of an eligible household.
