Annual deadline to add to Veterans’ Memorial Wall approaches

Community, News

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Towns County Veterans Monument Committee is currently accepting the names of local veterans who have passed on, to engrave onto the monument panel at Veterans Park in Hiawassee.

The deadline for review is Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018.

To determine eligibility, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7807 requests an honorable discharge certificate, and proof of Towns County residency, in addition to a $60.00 check made payable to WNC Marble & Granite/Matthew Barton, to defray the engraving cost.

The VFW annually accepts the names of veterans for review on the first Saturday of each month, May through September.

Over 1300 names of those who’ve served grace the memorial wall.

Eligible veterans will be honored at a Veterans Day dedication ceremony in November. Family and friends will be notified.

Existing names on current monuments will not be duplicated.

VFW Post 7807 is located at 1329 Sunnyside Dr. in Hiawassee.
