Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces the death of Mrs. Anne Cochran Gilmore passed away peacefully in her home in Atlanta Georgia is on May 6, 2018. She was 80 years old.
Anne was born in Molena, Georgia on December 10, 1937 to James Cochran and Mamie Foster Cochran. Raised on a farm in Molena with her siblings, she attended Molena Elementary School and graduated from Molena High School in 1955. She continued to pursue her education in Atlanta at Oglethorpe University and Georgia State University.
She married James Parmele “Jim” Gilmore in December, 1971. During their 46 years of marriage, they lived in Houston, TX, Metairie, LA, Glendale, CA, Highlands, NC, Lexington, KY, Young Harris, GA, and most recently, Atlanta. In each place they settled, they established strong roots and made lasting friendships. Together, they traveled throughout the United States, Far East and Europe. She had a passion for painting, inspired by the beautiful places they had visited. As ardent historians, they enjoyed exploring new cities and planning their next adventure. Anne was an enthusiastic fan of Jim’s favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs and the Michigan Wolverines. A dedicated homemaker, Anne took the utmost pride in her home and was an exceptional cook and baker. An avid fisherwoman, she adored annual family trips to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. She also enjoyed reading, tennis, horses and volunteering. Her generosity of time and talent, especially with her church and family, had no limits. She was always a very active church volunteer, serving on the boards of Park United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY and Sharp United Methodist Church in Young Harris, GA.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Rachel Jane Sheffield and John Mark Sheffield, and her brother, Calvin Cochran. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her son, Sam Scott Sheffield, Jr.; stepchildren, Anne Foster (Chuck Brownfield); Colleen Hannah (John); James P. Gilmore, Jr. (Mary); and Kathy Stratton (Todd); and her grandchildren, Bentley, Greg (Jessica), Kate, and Ryan Foster; Asher (Monica), Blake, and Catherine Hannah; Riley Gilmore; Claire, Lauren, and Ashley Stratton; Jason Thomas (Brandi); and great-grandchildren, William and Emily Hannah, and Jacob and Alex Thomas.
The first Celebration of Life service will be held on May 21, 2018 at 2:00PM at Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, Georgia. An additional service will be held on May 30, 2018 at 2:00PM at Peachtree-Road-United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church or Peachtree Road UMC in memory of Anne C. Gilmore.
