Mr. Jerry D. Hood: Obituary

Obituaries

Mr. Jerry D. Hood, age 81 of Young Harris, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20, 2017 following an extended illness.

Jerry was born on July 7, 1935 in Union County to Homer L. Hood and Essie Kuykendall Hood. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where he previously served as a Deacon until his health declined. Jerry loved sports. He played basketball and baseball when he was in school and later on a men’s team in Young Harris. For several years he also coached Tony’s Little League teams. He enjoyed going to many Braves Games and spent many hours watching sports on TV. Jerry retired from Lockheed after thirty plus years of service at the age of fifty -five. He was a Structural Assembler working on the C-130, C-141, C-5A and Jet Star planes. His love for photography over the years consumed much of his free time. Jerry also became the family photographer for many special occasions, including birthdays and weddings. He also became involved in the Find-A-Grave web page and visited many local cemeteries making photos of graves and adding them to the web. He started a web page for Cornerstone Baptist Church and worked each week adding information about church services and special occasions. He was also photographer for his lifelong friend, the Honorable Zell Miller, during his time as Governor of Georgia. Jerry was also an assistant to Mr. Miller when he was Lt. Governor. The challenge of fixing things was dear to Jerry’s heart. He always had a project usually several at a time. Whether it be computer challenges which he loved- or some other electronic “trick” or even building things. He always had a plan brewing about how to do something new even after his illness just about had the best of him. He seemed to keep his mind working overtime. His mother-in-law, Roberta Hooper, believes all he needed to do was “touch something” and it was fixed!

Surviving are his loving wife of almost 60 years, Ruth Hooper Hood of Young Harris, one son, Tony Hood of Cumming, GA., sister, Dorothy and her husband Louie Lusk of Canton, GA., sister, Linda King of Young Harris, Ga., brother, Buddy Hood of Cottonwood, Idaho, as well as many other relatives and friends.
