HIAWASSEE, Ga – The United States Census Bureau is hiring for the approaching 2020 Census and a representative will be assisting with applications at the Towns County Public Library in Hiawassee on Monday, Dec. 9, from 9 – 11.30 a.m. and 2 – 5 p.m. Applications will be submitted online with assistance available.

“The 2020 Census needs about 120 applications just from Towns County,” Towns County Census Complete Count Committee Chair Patrick Malone said. “It is important that everyone with the opportunity to help with the 2020 apply now so that they can have all the required paperwork completed in time for the Census next year. By working for the 2020 Census Bureau, you can help make sure Towns County receives its fair share of more than of the more than $675 billion in federal dollars that are distributed based on population. These are your tax dollars being distributed so it is important that Towns County receives its fair share.”

Pay starts at $17 per hour, Malone explained, and there is an additional 58 cents per mile travel reimbursement. Positions are temporary and flexible, and full-time or part-time employment is available. Workers will be assigned to an area based on their location of residence.

According to Census.gov, to be eligible for a 2020 Census job, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a valid Social Security number.
• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Have a valid email address.
• Complete an application and answer assessment questions. (Some assessment questions are available in Spanish. However, an English proficiency test may also be required.)
• Be registered with the Selective Service System or have a qualifying exemption, if you are a male born after Dec. 31, 1959.
• Pass a Census-performed criminal background check and a review of criminal records, including fingerprinting.
• Commit to completing training.
• Be available to work flexible hours, which can include days, evenings, and/or weekends.

Most jobs require employees to:

• Have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license, unless public transportation is readily available.
• Have access to a computer with the internet and an email account (to complete training).

If you are employed elsewhere, your current job must be compatible with Census Bureau employment and not create conflicts of interest. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Employees must not engage in any partisan political activity while on duty.
