TOWNS COUNTY, Ga. – The Towns County Sheriff’s Office says recent internal audits uncovered missing items from both its evidence room and county-owned equipment inventory, according to a community update released today.

They stated that the Banks County Sheriff’s Office conducted a full audit of Towns County’s evidence room.

At the same time, sheriff’s office staff completed a 100% inventory of government-owned equipment. Both reviews identified items that could not be accounted for.

Officials said the discrepancies are under active investigation and that additional information will be released when available.

The office emphasized that accountability and transparency remain priorities as new leadership continues its transition.

The sheriff’s office also reported ongoing inspections and repairs within the county jail, including efforts to address longstanding maintenance and safety concerns.

The goal, officials said, is to improve conditions for both employees and inmates.
