Two arrested during traffic stop for drugs

PRESS RELEASE – On Tuesday May 6, 2025, a joint investigation by The Towns County and Clay County Drug Investigators led to a traffic stop on HWY 66.

During the stop probable cause was developed and a search of the vehicle resulted in an amount of methamphetamine and marijuana being confiscated.

Emily Joanne Smith, 32, of Gainesville was arrested and charged with the following:

  •  Felony, Possession of Methamphetamine
  •  Felony, use of Firearm by convicted felon during commission of a crime
  •  Felony, possession of firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain crime
  •  Misdemeanor, possession of marijuana, less than 1 oz.

Enoch Franklin Smith, 39, of Gainesville was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Felony, Possession of Methamphetamine
  • Felony, giving false name, address, or birthdate to law enforcement officer

During the stop, it was determined there were active warrants on both Emily Joanne Smith and Enoch Franklin Smith out of Clay County NC for theft of motor vehicle.

Also, there are additional warrants out of Hall County GA for Enoch Franklin Smith. Both are currently in jail with holds for Clay County and Hall County.

Towns County Sheriff Ken Henderson is pleased that the Towns County Sheriff’s Office and Clay County Sheriff’s office are working together to impact drug and criminal activity in our counties.
