YOUNG HARRIS, Ga – Young Harris College has cancelled all on-campus classes and activities for Thursday, October 29 before 5 p.m. Hurricane Zeta is expected to reach the area overnight.
In an online statement, the school said:
“All on-campus classes and extracurricular activities scheduled for Thursday, October 29, before 5 p.m. are cancelled. Instructors are encouraged to transition to distance learning if practical and to communicate their specific plans with their students.
The remains of Hurricane Zeta are projected to pass close to or directly over the YHC campus early tomorrow morning, bringing with them high winds and significant rainfall. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning and Flash Flood Watch for Towns County through tomorrow evening. While the potential impact of wind is currently anticipated to be limited, the potential impact of flooding rains could be significant.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates with any changes.”
“Hurricane Zeta has recently made landfall along the southeast Louisiana coast. Zeta will weaken as it moves inland and continue moving rapidly northeast. Winds across north and central Georgia will increase from west to east as the center of the remnants of Zeta move across the region. Maximum sustained winds are expected to be in the 25-45 mph range with the strongest peak gusts as high as 45 to 70 mph from tonight into Thursday morning. Furthermore, rain bands will continue to impact the forecast area through Thursday afternoon. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches in north Georgia, with some locally higher amounts possible in far northeast Georgia.”
