Divorce support offered as holiday season approaches

HAYESVILLE, NC – Coping with divorce is often intensified as the holiday season approaches. Many people feel overwhelmed by the stress and strain of trying to maintain the status quo when it seems their entire world is crumbling around them. The holiday season tends to remind of festive, happier times and is contrasted by the stark reality of loneliness and despair. While others eagerly anticipate the holidays, a divorced person might approach this time of year with panic, sadness, and dread. Although there are no magical solutions to cure the holiday blues, there are options available to make it easier to cope.

DivorceCare is offering support on Tuesday, Nov. 12, or Monday, Nov. 18, from 6-8 pm at Sweetwater Church located at 108 Sweetwater Church Road in Hayesville, NC. Both are the same session

DivorceCare, which is affiliated with Grief Share, began operating locally two years ago and focuses on healing the trauma associated with divorce. A 13-week session is held each spring and fall/

“The holiday season has begun,” said Nancy Rowland, a local leader with DivorceCare. “This might be the first holiday after your separation or divorce, or maybe it’s the second, third, or beyond. In the coming days, you are going to be facing some tough emotions. And due to the nature of Thanksgiving and Christmas – with its focus on family, social events, yearly traditions, expectations, and ‘cheer’ – the emotions can blindside you. You can lessen the emotional impact by knowing what to expect and being prepared.”

Rowland, along with her husband, Jay, has volunteered as a support coach with the non-profit support group for the past eight years
