YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – A bridge dedication is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. in honor of Dick Campbell, a notable, late resident of Towns County. Campbell’s family asked that the new bridge constructed by the Georgia Department of Transportation on State Route 66, over Crooked Creek in Young Harris, become the Dick Campbell Bridge in honor of the resident’s years of service, dedication, and consideration for the people of Towns County.
“Dick Campbell came to Towns County in 1936. He first purchased the Alexander Grist Mill and became well-known in the community as he provided the flour and cornmeal for almost the entire population,” Nora Lee Ferguson, Campbell’s daughter, said. “The old Mill House is one of the last historical places left in the county today. Mr. Campbell later opened a country store located next to the Crooked Creek bridge. The store sold both clothes and groceries. Mr. Campbell went out of his way to help the people in his community. He helped many people who were less fortunate and had fallen on harder times. His generousity, understanding, and kindness helped a number of children and adults from going hungry throughout winter time.
“He arranged for the children in the community to earn money by picking blackberries and selling them to him. He would then turn around and have a large company to come in and buy those berries and haul them away in large barrels. This is only one example of how he helped the people of the communityto earn extra cash to help feed their family in the harsh winter months.
“Mr. Campbell served as a constable in the community of Brasstown, the area known as Crooked Creek. He was known as a good-natured Christian man and was well-liked by the whole community. He was a very supportive father. He showed his support for his daughter as she played basketball by attending the games and supporting the team in any way possible.”
The public is invited to attend the bridge dedication.
