UPDATED: Bomb Threat Precautions Taken in Towns County

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Due to a rash of bomb threats delivered across the state of Georgia and nationwide, Towns County emergency officials have responded to the warning as a safeguard measure.

FYN learned that an explosive-detecting canine unit has been deployed through the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to a local facility.

While there does not appear to be cause for undue concern, FYN is awaiting an official press release from Towns County authorities at this time.

According to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, the threat was confirmed as received via email by a county recreation center employee.

Towns County Fire and Rescue, along with deputies from the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the facility. Once the location was deemed secure by first responders and the canine unit, the recreation center was returned to the custody of staff.

“It is to our understanding that a number of these threats were made around the state and were generic in nature with no specific mention of Towns County,” Towns County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Deputy Director Brandon Walls stated, “Our recreation center was cleared using explosive detection canines as a precaution. State and Federal authorities are aware and looking into the matter.”
