Young Harris College to hold memorial service for Zell Miller

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – A public memorial service will be held at Young Harris College on Monday, March 26, at 10 a.m. in the Glenn-McGinnis Hall for Towns County native Zell Miller. Miller was born in 1932 in Young Harris, later to attend and become a professor of history and political science at the college.

Zell Miller, a conservative Democrat, served as mayor of Young Harris from 1959 until 1960, before serving two terms as a Georgia state senator. Miller was elected as lieutenant governor of the state of Georgia in 1975, holding office for 16 years. From 1990 until 1999, Miller served as Georgia’s governor. Miller was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, serving until 2005.

“Zell Miller was a great man who did wonderful things,” Towns County Commissioner Cliff Bradshaw expressed. “He influenced the lives of so many, and he will be greatly missed.”

One of Miller’s proudest milestones was the creation of the Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) Scholarship Program which provides lottery-funded financial assistance to high-achieving students for post-secondary education.

Miller passed away surrounded by family Friday, March 23, at the age of 86. In lieu of flowers, the Miller family requests donations be made to the Miller Institute Foundation. The family respectfully requests privacy as they mourn their loss.
