HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7807 held a banquet dinner on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, to honor local public servants, teachers and students. Spaghetti and salad were served prior to the ceremony and a dessert table awaited guests.
Eighteen students, grades sixth through eighth, participated in the Patriot Pen essay contest. First place was awarded to Rylie Livingston, second place went to Alison Markham and third went to Austin Fairless.
Fifteen students, grades ninth through twelfth, took part in the Voice of Democracy public speaking competition. The first place winner was Vanessa Floyd, second place was awarded to Laura Gleaton, and third place went to Liam King.
Two hundred, one hundred, and fifty dollars were gifted to the students accordingly.
Citizen Education Teacher awards and two hundred dollar checks were presented to Shannon Floyd, of Towns County High School, Kim McClure, of Towns County Elementary, and Lawanda Lynn, of Eastgate Life Academy.
Public Servant award winners were Towns County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant John McCoy, Hiawassee Police Department Sergeant Tracy James, Towns County Fire and Rescue Captain Jeff
Towns County Herald was awarded a one hundred dollar check and Fetch Your News – a newcomer to the Towns County media scene – was verbally acknowledged for their community contribution.
Of notable attendance were Commissioner Cliff Bradshaw, Sheriff Chris Clinton, Fire Chief Harold Copeland, EMS Director Ken Nichols and Hiawassee Mayor-Elect Liz Ordiales.
