Towns County Sheriff’s Citizen Law Enforcement Academy Graduates Sixth CLEA Class

Towns County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the graduation of the sixth session of the Citizen Law Enforcement Academy on November 1, 2016. The Towns County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Law Enforcement Academy is a 10-week course designed to give participating citizens a close-up look at the operations of the Towns County Sheriff’s Office. Our special guest speaker was Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic (retired).
The class began with Sheriff Clinton teaching the history of the oldest elected office in the world. The first class gave an overview of two and a half millennia of recorded history as it pertains to the Office of Sheriff, leading up to the current challenges being faced in today’s world by sheriffs and deputies. Particular attention was given to the role of the sheriff in the State of Georgia and the English Common Law system of jurisprudence.

Additional classes included a close look at Uniform Patrol Duties and Responsibilities, Jail Operations, Court Services, Criminal Investigations, K-9 Unit Duties, Chaplain’s Program, State Certification, School Resource Officer/CHAMPS Program, Marine Patrol and Dive Team Duties.
Students will have the opportunity to complete a ride-along with the Uniform Patrol Division and experience firsthand what life is like for a deputy sheriff in Towns County. This part of the course has proven to be an eye opening experience for students of the course.
Upon completing the course, students are able to participate in our CLEA alumni program. Our CLEA alumni are now over 100 members strong and many of those are active volunteers for the sheriff’s office. In 2015, CLEA alumni worked a total of 1,686 hours, the equivalent of over $34,000 in overtime savings to tax payers.
Graduates of the sixth CLEA class are:  Linda Jones, Gordy Jones, Margaret Windham, Linda Metzler, Robin Webb, Sandy Fallin, Ben Fallin,  Jerry Wilson, Suzanne Wilson, Bob McEwan, Kristin Kalwarn, Keith Wall, Christine Harriott.
