Earl “Skip” Lynn Peters from Young Harris, GA went Home suddenly to be with the Lord on February 21, 2020 while working in Hiawassee, GA. Skip was born on May 13, 1951 in Aberdeen, MD and was 68 years old.
Skip served in the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta Force from 1969-1992. Among many awards bestowed upon Skip during his career, for his valor, he received the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest awards of a soldier: Distinguished Service Cross in 1989, Distinguished Service Medal in 1982, Silver Star in 1970. In addition, Skip received two Purple Heart medals, one in 1970 and 1990 for wounds received in action. He received The Humanitarian Service Medal in 1980, two Soldier’s Medals in 1980 and one Soldier’s Medal in 1982.

In addition to his military career, Skip was a professional home builder and owned his own construction company for 25 years building conventional and log homes and home improvement projects in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia until he retired in 2008. He then relocated from North East, MD to Orlando Florida with his wife to care for his two widowed stepsisters. In 2011, Skip and his wife found their final home together in Young Harris, GA. The couple worked together in partnership with the Shaklee Corporation achieving many awards since 1980. Skip recently began working as a Project Manager for T.L. Thompson Construction, Inc. in Hiawassee, GA, returning to his love for the construction industry.

Skip grew up on Alliance St. in Havre de Grace, MD where he learned to love the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing and boating most of his life. Skip loved God and His Word, his country, his family and friends and humbly served others throughout his life. He valued his place in God’s Army and considered himself a warrior for God.
Skip was an active member of Warriors Veteran Outreach in Murphy, NC. He was a member of the World Harvest Church North in Blairsville, GA and the North Mount Zion Church of God in Hiawassee, GA. He was a former member of Life Community Church in Newark, DE. He served in Towns County Food Bank and the Food Bank at North Mount Zion Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Georgia Lee (Deamer) Peters and by three sons and a daughter: Michael Lee Peters (Julie), Jeffrey Lynn Peters (Rachel), Nathan Lee Peters (Heather), and Christine Lynn Peters Glenn (David). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and by his stepbrother, Steve Foust from Havre de Grace, MD. He is preceded in death by his father, Earl L. Peters and his mother, Irene Scroggins Peters, his step siblings Herbert Pates, Jeannette Peters (Charles) Miller, Ramona Peters (John) Ondeck and Ladonna Peters (Joseph) Baldwin.

Celebration services will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Sharp Memorial UMC on Young Harris campus, 1114 Main St. Young Harris, GA at 11:00 a.m.

The Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces Funeral Services for Carlton Harold Bailey, age 91 of Jackson, Michigan (formerly Hiawassee, Georgia) who passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Taylor and Rev. Danny Byers officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 am until 2:30 pm on Monday at Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee. Military Honors will be presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Graveside Services and Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Conyers, Georgia. Firefighter Honors will be presented by DeKalb County Fire Department.

John Francis Delaney Jr: Obituary

John Francis Delaney Jr. passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 after an extended illness. John was born to the late John Francis Sr. and Edna Williams Delaney on December 15, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana. John was truly a fun guy who loved dogs, cars and tacos but would almost skip the tacos for a good game of poker. He was a funny and kind man who had an infectious laugh. He had a special place in his heart for animals, music and singing. John loved to travel and all things “out west”; he likely would have been a cowboy if the pay was better. He was a hard worker, loyal friend and loving family man and many referred to him as “Papa John”.

John is preceded in death by his above mentioned parents and sister, Kathleen Smith. He leaves behind his wife, Jerri Harwell Delaney; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Susan Delaney, Wayne and Laura Stuler, and Cory and Lauren Harwell; grandchildren, Ansley Delaney, Daniel Stuler, Andrew Stuler, Kayla Harwell; brother-in-law, Kevin Smith; niece, Sharon Wilkes and nephewThomas Smith; along with a host of extended family and dear friends, including the worlds best mother-in-law Marilyn Harwell.

Blanche Hogsed: Obituary

Ms. Blanche Hogsed, age 100 of Hiawassee, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Blanche was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. JVA and Emma (Sellers) Moore on September 21, 1919 in Hayesville, NC. Blanche was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, was the baby of 10 siblings, and she was a true Christian lady. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and a fabulous cook; she never wanted to let you leave her house hungry. She also loved shopping and quilting, especially baby quilts, but mostly loved visiting with friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband,Newton Hogsed; and her nine siblings. She is survived in death by daughter, Sarah Ellis; daughters and sons-in-law, Pat (Ken) Gibson and Peggy (Doug) Kendall; son, Jeff Hogsed; grandchildren, Stan Anderson, Tammy Smith, Tiffany Painton, Chet Kendall, Jill Ledford, Jeremy Hogsed, Tyler Hogsed; twelve great-grandchildren and five great great grandchildren which made five generations and she was extremely proud of that. She also and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends!

Freda Anne (Bortle) Schultz Whitaker, born April 4, 1927 in “Frog Hollow” NY, died February 19, 2020 in Hiawassee GA. She is predeceased by her parents, sister, brother and husband, Donald James Schultz. She is survived by 5 children: Robert Jay Schultz (Ginny), Tucson AZ; Carol Anne Eaton, Hiawassee GA; William Alan Schultz, Bloomfield NY; Donna Jean Schultz-Shagena (Chris), Powhatan VA; and Jeffrey Lee Schultz, Albion NY. She also leaves behind many grandchildren,  great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Her remains will be interned at Highland Memory Gardens, Apopka, FL. She spent the last 8 years in the care of Chatuge Regional Nursing Home. The family wishes to express their deep thanks of gratitude to all who cared for her there, especially Janet Tanner.

Juanita Marie Prentice: Obituary

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces the death and funeral services for Mrs. Juanita Marie Prentice, age 89, who passed away on Friday, February 21st, 2020 at her residence in Blairsville.

Mrs. Prentice was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, a daughter of the late Carl White and the late Jennie Crosley White. She had been living in Blairsville since 1992, moving here from Port St. Lucie, Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County, and the Union General Hospital Auxiliary. She was lovingly known as “Grams” by her family. Her husband, Robert E. Prentice, passed away in 1999.

She is survived by her family members: daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robert Roxbury; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sally Prentice; son and daughter-in-law, James and Leonda Prentice; and son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Leora Prentice; Ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Prentice have been scheduled for Friday, February 28th, 2020, to be held at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Robby Roxbury, Drew Prentice, Nathaniel Prentice, Andrew Jones, Harold Maybe, and William Prentice. Burial will be in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27th, between the hours of 6 until 9 p.m.

H. Lamar James: Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of H. Lamar James announce his passing on February 13, 2020. He was born on August 13, 1949 in Commerce, Georgia, the only child of Bud and Frances James. He was a graduate of the Jefferson High School Class of 1967, and earned a degree from Georgia Southern University in 1971. Through the years, he lived in several cities around Georgia and spent many years in Destin, Florida. He spent the past couple of years in a mountain home in Blairsville, Georgia, enjoying the view of Brasstown Bald.

Known to many as “Bubba,” he was a sports fanatic, an insatiable reader, an avid bowler and golfer, and a lifelong entrepreneur. He had a keen intellect and a sense of humor like no other. To know him was to laugh with him, probably until your stomach hurt.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert “Bud” James. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Maria James; mother, Frances James; daughter, Melody Hanlon (Greg); son, Lee Garrison (Marie); and grandchildren, Lindsey Garrison, Jared Garrison, and Eleanor Hanlon; along with cousins and many great friends.

The family will celebrate his life at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to The American Stroke Foundation.

Mrs. Chastain was born February 17, 1944 in Turtletown, TN to the late Charles J Muncher and the late Floyd Patterson Muncher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Chastain, brothers, Tom Muncher, Jack Muncher, George Muncher, and Charles CJ Muncher, sisters, Lillie Faye Brown, Mary Alice Meredith, and Corene Mashburn.

Mrs. Lougene Lydia Lance, age 85 of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her home on February 20, 2020 following a brief illness. Lougene was born on January 10, 1935 in Towns County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Lilly Cheek. She retired from Georgia Boot where she worked for over 50 years. Lougene was a long-time member of
Zebulon Baptist Church. She cherished her time spent with her family and having the joy of watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow over the years. Lougene’s favorite past time was attending concerts at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, most often with Mike and Peggy Callaway. With an open heart and an open door, she fed friends and family for over
six decades. Her beloved kitchen was visited by many throughout her lifetime.
She is preceded in death by many family members; daughter, Debbie Phillips, husband, Charles Lance, husband, Grover Thomas, sister, Bessie Mae Miller, sister, Wilma Brown, brother, J.T. Cheek, sister, Ruby Nelson, sister Lenora Wright, sister, Geneva Gantt, brother, Wayne Cheek, and several nieces.
Survivors include three daughters and son-in-laws and a son and daughter-in-law; Vickie and Earl Brackett, Rita and Terry Hughes, Kathy and Jeff Butt, Brian and Angie Thomas, seven grandchildren; Nikki Hughes, Ashley and John Davis, Nataley and Ethan Goins, Kayla and Travis Hemphill, Dustin Hughes, Lyndsey and Clay Smith, Brody and Kylie Thomas, eight great-grandchildren; Kamryn Mull, Gracie Hughes, Bristol Davis, Brylie Davis, Nixon Goins, Brecken Goins, Pearl Smith, Adelynn Thomas, and many nieces and nephews.

Doris McGowan: Obituary

Doris McGowan passed away on February 12, 2020, at her home in Blue Ridge, GA, surrounded by her family. Born April 25th, 1927 in Bronx, NY to Emil and Mary (Miller) Braun. She graduated from Otisville High School and married Joseph A. McGowan April 4th, 1948. They moved to Florida in an old jalopy that, probably, would not be deemed roadworthy by today’s standards. They had four children: Patricia (Halpin); Donna, Michael, and Merrily. Doris (mom to us) was strong-willed, opinionated and independent. She took classes at the University of Florida and eventually worked as our dad’s legal secretary. She was active in the Republican Party while living in Miami, Fl and retired in Blue Ridge, GA in 1981. While in Blue Ridge, she was active in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and took classes in clogging, basket weaving, chair caning, beading, playing the dulcimer, just to name a few. When our dad developed early Alzheimer’s, she became his primary caregiver and, at the same time, she took on her two invalid aunts. She cared for all three for several years until they passed. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Eleanor (Wilbur), Richard and Rita (Hosking) and so many of her friends. She will be missed by many.

Visitors will be received from 5-7 PM at Cochran’s Funeral Home with a rosary held by Fr. John Conway. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM February 18th, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Chastain Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Tankersley was born March 3, 1947, in Mobile, GA to the late Everett Tankersley and the late Bessie O’Neal Tankersley. He was preceded in death by his son, Mitchell Tankersley and sister, Cathy Payne.

The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Ira Thomas “I.T” Harkins, age 100 of Suches, Georgia who passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020.

Born March 15, 1919 in the “Flat Lands” of Suches, Georgia “I.T.” was the first of six children of James H. Harkins and Lola N. Abercrombie Harkins. Ira had four younger brothers, Eldo, twins Ralph and Harley, and Clyde. His baby sister, Stella Mae was his fifth sibling. Ira was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eldo Harkins, Ralph and Harley Harkins; and his wife, Pauline N. Jarrett Harkins. Ira is survived by his brother, Clyde Harkins of Suches, Georgia and Stella Mae Hayes of NC.

He is also survived by his two sons and their families: Son, Thomas H. and Karen W. Harkins (GA); Granddaughter, Jodi D. Johansen; Great Grandchildren: Benjamin A. Johansen, Gavin A. Johansen, and Virginia R. Johansen; Son, Robert L. and Lyn T. Harkins (SC); Grandson, Eric P. and Toni A. Harkins; Great Grandchildren: Logan G. Harkins, and Brooklyn A. Harkins.

He was blessed with an extended family of nephews and nieces, too numerous to list but all of whom he appreciated and loved.

He met his future wife, Blairsville native Pauline Neel Jarrett (deceased 2013), at Young Harris College. They married in 1945 and he continued to be a devoted husband for 68 years.

A career military man, he served in the US Army for 31 years, 4 months, and 17 days, retiring in Fort Hood, Texas as Sergeant Major on April 1, 1973. Drafted November 12, 1941 just before America’s entry into WWII from Baxter, GA for one year of service. He ended up making it his career. His tour of duties included Panama Canal Zone, Ft Lewis Washington, Atlanta General Depot, Philippines, Ft. Benning, GA, Germany, Ft. Hood, Texas, Korea, Vietnam and other US posts.

He became a devout Christian in his early married life. From that moment on, throughout his adult life he lived his faith. Wherever he was stationed or settled he was active and supportive in a local church. He served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and wherever the Church or community needed his services. His most recent church family whom he loved, was Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

His Army travels and retirement, never diminished or changed his longing to come back to the place of his birth and the experiences of his childhood…Union County and Suches, Georgia. Moving to Suches in 1980, Ira became involved in local activities. He was a board member of the Suches/Morganton Community Clinic, Suches Coordinator for Keep Georgia Beautiful, Blairsville Lions Club, North Georgia Honor Guard, Commander of the Blairsville VFW, and Life Time Member of Union County Historical Society. He was very active in helping to preserve the old Union County Court house and creating the book Heritage of Union County, Georgia, 1832-1994.

He was a passionate local historian, amateur archeologist, gardener, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved God, his immediate and extended family, Union County, and anyone he met. He never met a stranger.

He was of the generation of Faith, Flag, and Family.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Corinth Baptist Church in Suches with Military Honors presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m.

Mrs. Eva Mae Adams, age 65, of Murphy, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. She was born on January 12th, 1955, in Clay County, NC, to the late Jake & Clara Belle Walker Trout. She worked at Moog for thirty-plus years and was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. Eva loved everyone she came in contact with and always placed other people’s needs ahead of her own. She goes on to be with her parents, as well as her two brothers, Junior Trout and Bobby Ray Trout and sister Wanda Kay Trout McTaggart. She will be remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her husband, Vernon Adams; son Kevin Adams; sister, Faye (Donald) Teems; and brothers, JC (Joyce) Trout, and Arnold (Nancy) Trout. Also sharing in her legacy are several nieces and nephews, as well as, many wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy, with Rev. Clark Moss officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until the service hour at the funeral home. Brenda Cook Hitchcock, age 75 of Hiawassee, Georgia passed away Sunday, February 09, 2020. Brenda was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Margaret (McGiboney) Cook on January 06,1945 in Porterdale, Georgia. Brenda was a member of Woods Grove Baptist Church, was with the hospital Auxiliary for fourteen years, and was a Liaison with the Women’s Enrichment Center. She loved working with children, avid reader, and taking care of her plants. She is preceded in death by her husband John H. Hitchcock and her parents Joseph and Margaret Cook.
