HIAWASSEE, Ga – Qualifying for the 2021 municipal election closed today in Hiawassee, and no challengers came forward to face the incumbents.

All three incumbents were the only candidates to qualify for the city council and mayoral races.

  • Post 1 – Amy Barrett
  • Post 2 – Patsy Owens
  • Mayor – Liz Ordiales

The official election for the three seats will take place on November 2, 2021.

Hiawassee citizens will also vote on an alcohol referendum for package sales. The measure will address package sales within city limits. If passed liquor stores could open within the city of Hiawassee, but not the county.

Hiawassee already has an extensive alcohol ordinance in place which includes provisions for stores, such as it must be a 2,000 square foot building, 300 feet away from a church, and have $300,000 worth of inventory on hand.

The last date to register for the election is October 4, 2021 at the office of the Towns County Board of Elections and Registration.

Advance (Early) Voting begins on October 11 and ends on October 29. Advance Voting will be held at the office of the Towns County Board of Elections and Registration from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. including two Saturdays, October 16 and October 23.
